It’s typically screwed into the engine block or the cylinder head, close to the coolant passages. Its main function is to measure the temperature of the engine coolant. When the engine is cold, the coolant temperature is low, and the ECU adjusts the fuel injection and ignition timing accordingly to ensure a smooth start. As the engine warms up, the sensor sends updated temperature data, and the ECU makes more adjustments to keep the engine running at its best. If this sensor fails, the engine might run too rich or too lean, leading to poor performance and increased emissions.

Then there’s the crankshaft position sensor. This sensor is super important as it tells the ECU where the crankshaft is in its rotation. It’s usually located near the crankshaft pulley or the flywheel. The ECU uses the data from this sensor to time the spark plugs’ firing and the fuel injection accurately. Without accurate crankshaft position information, the engine simply won’t run properly. It might misfire, stall, or not start at all.

Let’s shift our focus to the outside of the engine, specifically the wheels. Wheel speed sensors are found at each wheel hub. These sensors are essential for the anti – lock braking system (ABS) and the electronic stability control (ESC). The wheel speed sensor measures how fast each wheel is rotating. When you hit the brakes hard, the ABS system uses this data to prevent the wheels from locking up. If a wheel starts to slow down too quickly compared to the others, the ABS can adjust the brake pressure to that wheel. The ESC system also relies on wheel speed sensors to detect if the vehicle is skidding or losing traction. It can then apply brakes to individual wheels and adjust engine power to keep the car stable.

In the transmission area, there are also several important electrical sensors. One of them is the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). This sensor is usually attached to the transmission selector lever mechanism. Its job is to tell the ECU which gear the transmission is in, whether it’s Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or one of the numbered gears. The ECU uses this information to control various functions, such as starting the engine only when the transmission is in Park or Neutral and shifting gears at the appropriate times.

There’s also the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor. You’ll find this sensor inside the transmission case. It measures the temperature of the transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is necessary for lubricating and cooling the transmission components. The TFT sensor sends temperature data to the ECU, which can then adjust shift points and other transmission functions to protect the transmission from overheating or operating in less – than – ideal conditions.

Moving to the interior of the car, around the dashboard, there’s the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor. As the name suggests, it’s located on the accelerator pedal assembly. This sensor measures how far you’ve pressed down the accelerator pedal. The ECU uses this data to determine how much power to send to the engine. It’s a key part of the drive – by – wire system, where there’s no mechanical connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle. Instead, it’s all electronic, and the APP sensor is what makes that communication possible.

The brake pedal position sensor is also located near the brake pedal. It senses when you press the brake pedal and sends a signal to the ECU. This signal is used for various functions, like activating the brake lights and assisting with some safety features, such as pre – charging the brakes if the system detects an imminent collision.

Now, let’s talk about the airbags. The crash sensors for airbags are strategically placed around the car. There are usually front crash sensors located in the front bumper beams or the radiator support. These sensors detect when the car has been in a front – end collision. Side – impact sensors are located in the doors or the B – pillars. When a sufficient impact is detected, these sensors send signals to the airbag control unit. The control unit then decides whether to deploy the airbags and how many to deploy, all in a split second to protect the passengers.
